MESSAGE FROM DR. JAY MARTIN
In the course of my work with Ohio Wesleyan and the National Soccer
Coaches Association, I have had the opportunity to travel to several
foreign countries as a guest of the National Soccer Federation. I have
visited Brazil and Argentina, as well as many European countries
including England, Germany, Scotland, Wales, Russia, Italy, Portugal,
Switzerland and Austria. After observing soccer coaching sessions in
each of these countries, I have compiled the strong points of each into
a unique perspective on coaching. This style of teaching provides the
means to develop the proper techniques and habits for becoming a truly
competitive soccer player. The teaching is done in small groups,
allowing each player to be given ample individual instruction.
FIELDPLAYER EXPERIENCE
This is a soccer camp. No frills. We train in soccer all day long. On the field there is a session in the morning for technique, a session in the afternoon for tactics and there is a competition in the evening. Campers are divided into groups by age and ability level and play in small sided games. High school players will also attend classroom sessions on match analysis, the collegiate recruiting process, individual goal setting and other topics related to becoming a successful student-athlete.
GOALKEEPER EXPERIENCE
The Super Soccer Camp goalkeeper program is directed by OWU
Goalkeeper Coach Mike Lentz. Players age 8-13 who register for the
goalkeeper program will be encouraged to attend a combination of field
player and goalkeeper sessions. Players ages 14-18 will attend two
goalkeeper specific sessions each day. In both age groups, players
will participate in competitive games during the evening sessions.
This format allows the staff to provide the players with
position-specific instruction in both the training and game
environments.
HIGH SCHOOL TEAM EXPERIENCE
The OWU team camp is an excellent way for high school players to
prepare for the season by training together (within the OHSAA rules).
Under the direction of Dr. Jay Martin and his coaching staff, players
experience the challenges of the OWU preseason program. A combination
of fitness, technique, tactics and mental preparation, the OWU
preseason program will prepare the players and team for the rigors of a
demanding season. Teams must register a minimum of 12 players; all
applications must be submitted together. Please contact the camp
office for complete team camp details.
ROY RIKE FIELD
The soccer complex at Ohio Wesleyan University is one of the finest collegiate facilities in the country. Campers enjoy training on one of three practice areas and the lighted game field. The complex boasts an on-site training room, bleachers for 2700 fans, locker rooms and a concession stand. Campers meet with Dr. Jay Martin each morning in the stadium for daily announcements and demonstrations.
All campers stay in the air conditioned residence halls. Campers must provide their own bed linens, towels and alarm clock. Roommates are assigned at random unless requested on the application. Campers are supervised by adult staff at all times. All-you-can eat meals are provided in the newly renovated Smith Dining Hall.
CAMP STORE & BANK
To eliminate the need to carry cash, the Super Soccer Camp operates a “camp bank.” Campers are asked to deposit money (average $40) into the camp bank during check-in. Then, throughout the week, campers have the option of purchasing ice cold sports drinks, water, snacks, pizza (at night) and Team OWU Adidas gear from the camp store. The camp staff will record all purchases and tell campers their daily balance. At the conclusion of camp the balance is returned to the camper.
